Ensuring Seal Integrity to Reduce Food Waste
- A Partnership for Quality and Sustainability
Cranswick is one of the UK’s leading food producers, focusing on the production of premium-quality fresh food products. Key components to maintaining quality throughout shelf life and minimising food waste due to spoilage are utilizing artisan techniques to deliver product quality, as well as ensuring packaging seal integrity.
Two years ago, during their search for innovative inspection solutions, Cranswick’s R&D team discovered TriVision, offering a unique all-in-one solution that combines seal integrity inspection and label verification. The dual functionality provided a comprehensive approach to packaging quality control.
User-friendly Technology That Delivers Results
A key factor in Cranswick’s decision to trial TriVision’s equipment was the simplicity of the system. According to the R&D manager at Cranswick Group, William Miles, the software was designed to be intuitive and easy to use:
“TriVision’s approach to software usability is one of their key selling points. Label verification can be complex, and the easier it is to set up, the more engaged our production teams will be.”
Cranswick implemented the system across multiple sites and divisions, including fresh pork, sliced and cooked meats, to assess its impact. The results were immediate and tangible:
✔ Reduction in seal entrapment and delamination
✔ Better usability and system engagement among operators
✔ Correlated reduction in food waste at retail partner stores
Overcoming
Implementation Challenges
Integrating vision-based seal inspection into high-speed manufacturing environments is not without challenges. The initial rejection rates were higher than expected, requiring a phased adaptation period. However, with careful expectation management and system adjustments, the technology quickly became an asset:
“Vision technology changes how manufacturing sites operate. You need to manage expectations – initially, rejection rates may be higher, but trust in the system grows as it accurately detects relevant contaminants.” Says William Miles.
Looking Ahead and Strengthening the Partnership
Cranswick appreciated TriVision’s collaborative approach to continuous improvement. When the company suggested enhancements, TriVision was receptive and quick to implement solutions, ensuring ongoing product optimisation.
Looking ahead, as food manufacturers face increasing demands for more sustainable production, Cranswick continues to explore new technologies that contribute to its food waste reduction goals. With WRAP’s Food Waste Reduction Roadmap targeting a 50% reduction across the supply chain by 2030, manufacturers, retailers, and consumers all share the responsibility of tackling waste.
TriVision’s seal integrity solution has proven to be an important contributor to this mission. Moving forward, we see opportunities to collaborate even further, integrating emerging technologies and industry partnerships to continue reducing food waste across the supply chain.
